The intent:The intent of this design project is to transform the 1997 home's fireplace into a centerpiece that embodies the warmth and charm of a mountain retreat. The goal is to create a welcoming haven where friends and family can gather, enjoying the serene beauty of the mountains. Cozy and comfortable seating will surround the fireplace, fostering connection and togetherness, while a large flat-screen TV above the mantle seamlessly integrates entertainment into the space.
To maintain harmony with the existing wood tones and granite, the design will incorporate natural materials and rich textures that complement the home’s character. The result will be a stylish and modern focal point that enhances both functionality and the rustic elegance of its surroundings, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and refinement.

The Opportunity:
Built in 1997, the home’s fireplace featured a simple hearth and flat tiled surround, which no longer reflected the family’s lifestyle or the stunning mountain setting. As a central element of the living room, the fireplace played a significant role in family life, serving as a gathering spot to warm up after long days on the slopes. The goal was to transform this dated feature into a bold focal point that not only elevated the room’s aesthetic but also enhanced its functionality with additional seating.
Before :The Resolution:
With the living room’s vaulted ceilings, there was a unique opportunity to emphasize the vertical space and create a dramatic impact. Extending the fireplace surround to the ceiling draws the eye upward, celebrating the room’s architectural height and creating a sense of grandeur. This also allowed for the integration of layered materials and textures to complement the home’s natural surroundings, blending seamlessly with the existing wood tones and granite.
Additionally, the design sought to provide a cozy and inviting atmosphere by incorporating ample seating around the fireplace for family and friends to gather comfortably. By carefully balancing scale, materiality, and function, the updated fireplace has become a striking centerpiece that reflects the family’s love of skiing, connection, and the beauty of their mountain retreat.
