A BLANK SLATE of Potential

The Scope:

Designer for a Day

The intent:

This design project centers around creating a warm, welcoming home for a pair of empty nesters who cherish spending time with their three grown children and beloved dog. The goal is to design spaces that foster togetherness and connection while also considering the home's future appeal. With an eye toward eventual resale, the design will strike a balance between personal comfort and timeless features that will attract an active family to love the home just as much.

the Setting:

A single family home in Eagle, CO

the Mood:

Calm, inviting, peaceful, family-focused.

The Opportunity:

The couple’s downstairs area offered a blank slate with exciting potential. Once a vibrant playroom for their kids, complete with a climbing wall and ping pong table, the space is now primarily used as an extra guest room. As their needs have evolved, they envision transforming it into a multi-functional retreat—an inviting space for guests that also serves as a cozy spot for watching movies. Additionally, they are eager to incorporate thoughtful updates that will enhance the space’s appeal and add value for future resale.

The Resolution:

The downstairs area offered ample square footage, allowing us to create two distinct and functional zones: a game/activity area and a cozy retreat for rest and relaxation. To visually define these spaces while maintaining a cohesive design, we recommended painting the walls in the movie area a deep charcoal gray. This rich, moody color not only enhances the cinematic atmosphere but also adds a touch of sophistication to the space.

To further delineate the movie area, we suggested a wood slat accent wall, drawing attention to the large flat-screen TV and adding warmth and texture. A generously sized sectional couch provides plenty of comfortable seating for family movie nights or casual lounging. For versatility, we included a Murphy bed in our concept plans, seamlessly blending into the design and offering additional sleeping accommodations for guests without compromising the room’s functionality.

The overall layout and finishes were carefully chosen to not only meet the family’s current needs but also to enhance the home’s value for future resale. The thoughtful updates ensure the space feels welcoming, adaptable, and ready to be enjoyed for years to come.
